What Happens When a Piano Maker Builds a Digital Piano

It is eleven at night in an apartment building. Somewhere behind a shared wall, someone has just finished a long day and wants to play the slow movement they have been working on all month. On an acoustic piano, that wish ends at the first chord. The neighbors will hear it, and so will the landlord.

This is the problem a digital piano solves, and it is a real one. Plenty of pianists live in apartments, and many of them want to play when the day is done. What they usually give up is the feeling of sitting at an instrument rather than a device.

PIANOVA is Hailun's answer to that trade-off. It is the company's line of digital pianos, sold in the United States through its own PIANOVA store and in other countries through Hailun's dealers. The idea behind it is simple. A piano maker should know what a piano is supposed to sound and feel like, so a piano maker should be able to build a better digital one.

The sound starts at a real grand

Every digital piano plays back recordings of a real instrument. The question is which instrument, and how carefully it was recorded. PIANOVA's piano sound is sampled from Hailun acoustic grands, recorded at ten different strengths of touch so that a soft note and a loud note carry different tone colors, not just different volumes.

The 3-Series models go a step further. Hailun's sound engine for those pianos adds the small noises that make an acoustic piano feel alive: strings ringing in sympathy with each other, the soft sound of dampers settling, the release of a key.

A piece of wood inside the cabinet

The most unusual thing about PIANOVA is not electronic at all. Inside Series 2 and Series 3 models, Hailun has built a spruce resonance board, cut from the same kind of tonewood used for acoustic soundboards. Hailun calls it PianoHeart. When the speakers play, the wood vibrates with them.

It is a small idea with a long history behind it. In an acoustic piano, the soundboard turns a string's thin vibration into a room-filling tone. PIANOVA borrows that principle and puts it to work on speaker sound. Two layouts are used: a split spruce chamber in the H-202 and H-302, and a different configuration in the H-205 and H-305.

Built for the way people live now

The rest of PIANOVA is designed around modern practice:

  • Silent practice with two headphone jacks, so a teacher and student, or two siblings, can play together without a sound in the room.

  • Bluetooth on every model, for streaming backing tracks or connecting a learning app.

  • On the 3-Series, Wi-Fi, a touchscreen, and a microphone input with pitch correction for players who sing while they play.

  • The HD-300, a slimmer portable model for small rooms and players on the move.

There is also a detail that reflects where the instrument comes from. Alongside grand piano, organ, strings and choir, PIANOVA includes 41 Chinese folk instrument voices, which Hailun says Western-brand digital pianos do not offer.

An honest place in the family

A digital piano is not an acoustic piano, and Hailun does not pretend otherwise. Hailun's uprights and grands remain the heart of what the company builds. For a home that can hold one, an acoustic instrument still offers a depth of sound and touch no speaker system fully matches.

But not every pianist lives in that home. Some live in a studio apartment, practice at midnight, or need a second instrument for a teaching room. For them, PIANOVA offers something most digital pianos cannot: the judgment of people who have spent decades building the real thing.
